Humber Lifeboat Station

Demolition of the old boat house

The Lifeboat house and slipway was removed as they had become obsolete and dangerous. the series of photographs below show the work as it progressed. From the first photograph too the last was only ten days.

Humber Work Boats of South Kilinghome brought all the cranes heavy plant needed to remove all the ruble and steel. Every thing had to be done via the river as Spurn Point is a nature reserve with only a single track road totally unsuitable for any form of large vehicles or heavy traffic. As this would disturb the wildlife.

From the photographs you can see the boat house was removed whole, lifted of its framework and placed on a barge for removal. All the rest was broken into manageable pieces and removed the same way.

After completion of the demolition the only thing left on the beach was a few foot prints left by bewildered visitors looking for the missing boat house.
